We all want hair that’s healthy and looks beautiful. Dr Oz, who has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey show, has shared health and anti-aging tips and he is now giving hair advice for those seeking healthy hair.

According to Dr. Oz, your outer beauty is a reflection of your health. Deficiencies in vitamins, minerals, and having a poor diet can lead to weak hair. Illness and disease can also cause hair loss or dry hair . If you are experiencing difficulties with your hair, it’s best to examine what you have been putting into your body. If you are noticing that you are losing your hair, it would be best to consult a dermatologist or a trichologist.
Dr Oz also states, “You’ve got to treat [your hair] like a fine silk blouse that got wet…if you’re blow-drying your blouse that got a little wet or if you’re combing it backward over and over again, or if you’re too rough with it, it begins to fray. Your hair has to be dealt with extraordinarily gently.” This is especially true for damaged hair which tends to be fragile. Rough handling with your hair can lead to thin hair and split ends.

Dr. Oz also mentions the effects hard water can have on the hair. He suggests the best thing you can do is to “get a charcoal filter and put it in your showerhead,” he says. “When chlorine is present in the water in your shower, it can dry you up a lot. A filter is an easy fix”. Chlorine and other minerals present in water can cause your skin and hair to become dry and dull. To prevent dry hair from hard water, you can use a shower filter and you can also use a chelating shampoo to remove the minerals from your hair.

The article also states, “Finally, only shampoo when your hair is dirty—not every day”. Many shampoos contain sulfates that can strip the hair of moisture leaving it dry. Many find it helpful to use conditioner to wash their hair (if they wash several times a week) and to only use shampoo once a week.

Environmental factors such as the sun can cause damage to the hair as well. Dr Oz explains, “the sun actually fries the hair and will take away that lovely body it’s supposed to have.” Exposure to the sun can also cause your hair to become lighter and duller. Try covering your hair when you are in the sunlight, especially during the summer time.

Are you dealing with damaged hair?

Are you tired of dealing with thin hair and bald spots? Are people constantly asking you what happened to your hair? Have you been trying to grow your hair and nothing has been working?

You are not alone. Most of us at one point or another damaged our hair by using too many heat appliances, too many chemicals, neglect, etc. Even one visit to the wrong stylist can result in damaged strands. Unfortunately it can only take a few minutes to cause hair damage and it can take months or even a year to grow back healthy hair. But don’t be discouraged! It does take time but healthy hair is possible!

My hair has been damaged and I am in the process of getting it healthy again. My purpose for this blog was to share my experience with others who are on their journey to healthy hair and are struggling with damaged hair. I have definitely gone through my ups and downs with my hair. As a little girl, my mother didn’t have a clue how to take care of it and neither did I until a few years ago. My damage came from going to different stylists who were careless and eventually caused me to have bald spots and thin hair. This forced me to research the internet and learn as much as possible about hair care since it has always been a passion of mine.

First it is important to understand what has been causing the damage so you can know how to prevent it in the future. Also remember that healthy hair requires patience and commitment. Some people can grow hair very quickly, but if you are a slow grower it is ok! For most people it takes time.

Feel free to leave any comments or suggestions. Now let’s start our journey to healthy hair!

Healthy hair requires patience and commitment.

A watched pot doesn’t boil. Patience is a virtue when it comes to hair growth. Restoring damaged hair to a healthy state takes time. For some people achieving healthy hair is very simple and for others they have to work much harder to get the hair they want. The average growth rate is ½ an inch per month. That equals 6 inches a year. Some people get less than that and others get more than that. Since most people only get 3 inches in 6 months, you have to be patient if you want to see progress with your hair.

Be consistent. As with any goal in life, you must be consistent if you want to achieve results. The same thing goes with hair care. Once you develop a hair regimen, stay consistent. Try not to slack with your routine. If you deep condition once a week try to stick to it.

Stop comparing yourself to other people. This was hard for me to do. I would see women with beautiful hair and think why not me? Everyone’s hair journey is different. There’s nothing wrong with admiring a healthy head of hair but if you find yourself constantly comparing your hair to someone else’s, you will most likely find yourself discouraged and frustrated and you will want to give up before you even try. Focus on your hair journey.

Be careful who you tell your hair goals with. Have you ever told someone about a goal you were working on and they were negative and said you could never do it? I told other people that I want my hair to grow and be healthy and some people were negative and implied that I could never have the hair I want.

No matter what your goal is in life, you need people who are supportive. If you feel that someone is being negative then its best you keep your hair goals and challenges to yourself. Sometimes their words can only cause you to doubt yourself.

If you want healthy hair start with what you eat. When your body is at its healthiest, it will function at its best. Hair, skin, and nails can be a reflection of our diet. If your body is not getting enough nutrients, neither is your hair. A poor diet can cause hair to look dull, to become dry and brittle, and your growth rate can slow down. A balanced diet with healthy proteins, fruits, and veggies is best for your hair to grow at its optimum rate and be at its healthiest.

Appreciate the small signs of progress. So your hair is not growing as fast as you would like but how does it look and feel? Do you notice less breakage and shedding? Does it look thicker? Does it feel soft? Length isn’t the only sign of progress.
